On Saturday of last week, former West Henderson High football standout Dalton Cole played in his final game at Brevard College, and like he’s done throughout his career, he made an impact.

Cole had two touchdowns in the game, leading the Tornados to a 40-3 win over Averett on Senior Day at Brevard. In his final game of the season, he finished with 14 catches for 186 yards, with a touchdown catch and a rushing touchdown. And even though he dominated the stat sheet, at game’s end, he was still only thinking of his teammates.

“Honestly, the reality of it potentially being my last game of football didn’t set in until after everything. It was just another day and another game. Of course the touchdown to Chason Lowery was special … that was his first one in college and I got to throw it to him so that was awesome,” Cole said.

In his four-year career, he set Brevard College records in passing yards (3,601) and passing touchdowns (33). In his freshman year, he was named the USA South Conference Rookie of the Year, and the following year, he led the Tornados to their first college bowl win in BC history.

It’s a memory that will always be cherished by Cole and his other 18 senior teammates, he said.

“After (Saturday’s) game, it all set in, like most of these guys I’ve been with for a long time. All 19 of us were here for the bowl game, and honestly that’s the best memory in football I’ve ever had,” Cole said. “So that will always have these guys a special place in my life.”

Cole is a 2018 West Henderson High graduate and was the starting quarterback for the Falcons during his high school career. Making the change to college ball was a challenge back then, he said.

“College football has been tough. Time management was an essential skill I had to learn,” Cole said. “Between meetings, practice, lifts and class, I had to figure out how to balance all of that and still have some personal time. College football also taught me a lot of lessons. I’ve made a ton of friends and a few that I’ll have with me for a long time. It’s been a good ride, that’s for sure.”

This season has been one of his most challenging ones yet. With a hot prospect at quarterback coming to the team, Cole was moved to the wide receiver position, a position he had to learn from game to game.
